Higgins
Higgins is the farm-to-table restaurant that put Portland on the map for top notch cuisine!
Established back in 1994, Higgins is a true gem and pioneer of Portland's reputation as a food mecca.
The interior is filled with dark, rich wood, and the dining area set with proper white tablecloths. Don't worry if fancy seating isn't your style, the bar area at Higgins is very cozy, laid back and lively and you can enjoy the same amazing food and service there - this is where I prefer to sit whenever possible!
Higgins is absolutely the type of spot to order a proper Manhattan or martini to kick off your meal. Pair that with some fresh, delicious oysters to really get your meal off to a nice start.
Their main menu changes fairly regularly, holding true to the farm-to-table model. But they always make sure there are plenty of excellent gluten free choices and their meat is absolutely top notch here. Though they do not label their menus for gluten, Higgins' servers are top notch and will take great care with recommendations or modifications to ensure you can enjoy a wonderful meal, safely.
Do beware though that someone will automatically bring you an amuse bouche, which 9 times out of 10 will contain gluten. I forget about this every time, but I usually am dining at Higgins with a companion who eats mine.
I've been to Higgins far more times than I can count and have had so many amazing and adventurous dishes here. But it's a great spot for a basic meat and potatoes person as well. Honestly any steak I've had at Higgins is in my top rankings for best steaks ever at a restaurant, and I am highly selective.
I highly recommend booking a reservation for this James Beard award recipient as this place can get very busy, especially before big shows at the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall. And they do accept reservations for the bar area to boot!
